North of Tomorrow releases Something Unexpected
North of Tomorrow, a band hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, consists of Gary Adrian (bass/pedals/vocals/keyboards), Brian Mueller (guitar/keyboards/mellotron/vocals/loops) and Stephen P. Rogers (sonic analyst/voice of reason/vocals). They have recently unveiled their second release, titled Something Unexpected.
After spending some time with this album I found it to be a diverse album, not sticking to a single genre or style. I thought the flow of the songs was unique. Take for instance the opener “New October” which contains a lot of different elements. Some of it felt electronic and some felt more organic. It’s also quite catchy. The song also breathes. There’s no rushing here, making for a very enjoyable listening experience.
There’s some dissonance on “It Could Have Been Me” which is an exceptional song. The opening groove is fantastic. There’s a lot to appreciate between the pads, guitars and more. I also thought the breakdown in the song was unique. The bass work was really great.

“My Sweet Spot” was the first time Peter Gabriel came to mind. The song is also one of the more infectious songs on the album. It’s dynamic and smooth. Some parts felt more traditional but there’s also some unexpected twists and turns as well. The horns are really well done on this song.
The band pulls out more of the good on a number of songs. One of my personal favorites was “Shakey Bones” which contains a laid back jazzy groove with some absolutely killer lead guitar work.
One of the emotional moments comes with “We Were A Heart Away.” It’s pensive, airy and dreamy. There are a number of other high points such as “Window Dressing” and Go Where You Find It” but I really didn’t feel like there were any songs I didn’t want to listen to.
One thing I thought was really great about this album was the attention to detail. There’s a lot going on and everything is taken care of.
